Thanksgiving is still a week away but many people are ready to get into the holiday spirit early this year. While some large light displays are not on yet, such as Sar-Ko-Aglow in Lenexa and Christmas in the Park at Longview Lake, Winter Magic KC has had their lights on since early November!
Winter Magic KC is a drive-thru Christmas light experience in Swope Park next to the Kansas City Zoo. The display is approx. 1 mile in length and features the longest light tunnel in the Midwest. The price of admission per standard sized vehicle is $20. The proceeds go to the KC Parks Summer Camp Scholarships.
Recently my family and I visited Winter Magic KC with my family. Something we noticed was a pickle off by itself- the kids thought it was fun (even asked for a picture which I wasn’t able to get). I asked Winter Magic KC what up with the pickle. Here’s their response:
“For most, the Christmas pickle is a lesser-known holiday tradition… A decoration in the shape of a pickle is hidden on a Christmas tree, with the finder receiving either a reward or good fortune for the following year. What we did at Winter Magic is created a lighted Christmas pickle character that we display at the light park. We move him around and because he’s animated, he’s not always lit up and visible. We host the Christmas Pickle Scavenger Hunt Contest in which guests try and catch a glimpse of the Christmas pickle. If they’re lucky enough to capture an image of him, then they can post it on FB with hashtag #ChristmasPickleKC for a chance to win a Magic Pass (five free tickets to Winter Magic). 😊”.
In addition to the cost of vehicle admission, there is a variety of fresh popcorn for sale (they smelled great!). You can find Santa at the park too- check the Winter Magic KC website for more details on when he’s there. Tickets need to be purchased online BEFORE you go. The display will continue every night (unless inclement weather) from November- January 2, 2020.
