Shawnee, Kansas is located 10.5 miles southwest of Kansas City, Missouri and is home to 67,000+ residents. 
 

Schools

Public schools for Shawnee, KS include Shawnee Mission School District and the De Soto School District.  Private schools in Shawnee include Maranatha Academy, Good Shepherd School, Bishop Miege High School, St. Joseph Catholic School, Hope Lutheran Grade School, Grace Christian Academy, Sacred Heart School, Midland Adventist Academy, and the Canterbury Academy at Shawnee Crossings.

Cycling

Shawnee is designated as a Bicycle Friendly Community and was the first City in the Kansas City Metro area to adopt a plan that used both on-road and off-road bicycle facilities.  There are 18+ miles of on-street bike lanes, 27+ miles of off-street trails, and 40+ miles of share-the-road lanes.

Parks

Shawnee has many parks and playgrounds, including Erfurt Park (24135 W 71st Street), Shawnee Mission Park Inclusive Playground (7900 Renner Road), and Mill Creak Steamway Park (19425 Wilder Drive).

Swimming

Shawnee, KS has 2 public pools open during the summer and a Shawnee annual pool pass provides residents access to both pools.  The larger of the two is the Thomas A. Soetaert Aquatic Center, which features a 50 meter competition pool, two 125 ft. body slides, a lazy river, 3 diving boards, AquaClimb and a fully enclosed baby pool with a water playground. 

Splash Cove at the Jim Allen Aquatic Center is the smaller of Shawnee’s public pools, but is very popular with families of young children.  Splash cove features a 350 gallon conch shell to get soaked under, a mini wave pool, a water playground, instructional pool, and a 125 ft. full body slide.

Theatre

Theatre in the Park, located at 7710 Renner Road, is a large outdoor community theatre.  Guests can bring blankets, lawn chairs, and snacks to cozy up under the stars while enjoying a quality show.  Theatre in the Park is a summer favorite for Kansas City Metro Area locals. 

Shawnee Town 1929

Shawnee Town 1929 is a living history museum with little buildings where visitors learn about what Shawnee was like in the 1920’s.  There are events and classes throughout the year, including Homeschool Days.  Students can plant seeds, churn butter, feed a rooster and hens, take a lesson from a 1920’s reader, and step into what life was like in the 20’s. 

Food & Dining

Popular places to eat include the Hereford House, Blind Box BBQ, Bates City BBQ, Hayward’s Pit Bar B Que & Catering, Old Shawnee Pizza, Jose’ Peppers, Pablo and Bill Restaurant, and Pizza West. 
 
Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant, located at 13803 Shawnee Mission Parkway, is a HUGE hit with kids of all ages.  Fritz’s serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and shakes.  The highlight of eating at Fritz’s are the trains running along tracks on the walls and having a train deliver your food to your table! 
 

Events

Farmer’s Market
Shawnee hosts a farmer’s market on Saturday mornings from June to October in the city hall parking lot.
 
Special Events

Special events include Kids’ Fest Business Fair in March, Veteran’s Day Celebration, K9’s at the Cove, Shawnee Great Grillers Blues & BBQ, PARKED (food trucks, fire works, music and fun), Holiday Treasures Craft Festival, April Showers Craft Fair and summer Concerts in the Park. 

Annual Traditions

Annual events also include the Tour de Shawnee bicycling tour and the very popular Old Shawnee Days.  Old Shawnee Days is an annual summer tradition featuring a parade, carnival rides, live music, good food, entertainment, and a craft fair.  It’s a popular event for both residents and visitors alike.
